Spring, Baseball, and Social Media in the DC Area

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zS8uwpMaDXQ]

When I created a fun Keynote presentation to help promote fundraising for our wonderful high school baseball team in McLean, Virginia, I couldn’t help myself.  What motivated me was the fact that our son is a catcher on the Varsity team.

I used my studio mic to do the voice over, added a classic ballgame theme song, then played it as my Screenflow was recording the computer screen.  To cap it off, I sent it over to YouTube and posted it on my “voicebylinda” channel.  Ah, the things we do for our children.

Last week, an interesting opportunity presented itself over the web by USA Today to promote local high school sports.  They selected four sets of rival games and polled their website fans.  What did the winner get?  The chance to be televised live!  Wow!  Naturally, I sent the link out to my FB and Twitter followers.  I was delighted by the responses and supporting votes.  Oh, right, now I’m blogging about it on WordPress!

Although it was touch and go for a while during the voting, we won the poll!  After playing for 12 innings, we also won the game, 2-1!

The irony?  Our son didn’t play because of a hurting back.

An Insight from Attending VOICE 2010

Elegant Dessert from the Gala Banquet

For many years, when I taught social studies in a fifth grade classroom, it was common acceptance to believe that there a few basic necessities in life that everyone needs in order to survive, such as food, water, shelter, and clothing.  However, if there was one overarching theme of the recent Voice 2010 event, I would say that the one word that was central to me was “connections.”  I don’t mean who knows who, I truly mean how we thrive by learning and sharing ideas with each other.  There was a deep sense of community that hovered within the conference that allowed many of us to connect as friends.  I was struck by how much better our professional survival is when we realize we are all evolving.  Cooperation is always much better than competition.  No one person holds all the knowledge, be it in the areas of  technology, community, or education.  Those are the three themes around which the conference topics were developed.   Yes, I must admit the guest speakers were plentiful and first-rate.  But, some of my best conversations were one-to-one with VO folks in the exhibit hall or during a break after the official sessions.  In fact, one conversation in the lobby hallway with the talented Jeffrey Kafer led to a published cartoon about name tags!

Penny Abshire and James Alburger spearheaded a phenomenal team to create a dream conference.  But how did they pull it off?  They developed their own goals, then put their plan into action.  They shared their ideas with others, they assembled a likeminded team, they networked with presenters and attendees alike, and most of all, they remained open to the process and dedicated the time needed to make it happen.    We can learn a lot by their example.  No one reaps the dessert without first getting the right ingredients for the rest of the meal.  I’d say they succeeded by creating quite a banquet of ideas for the rest of us!

Blogging with my iPad at VOICE 2010

Brad Garrett, Rick Lance, and Me

What fun! Blogging with my iPad at VOICE 2010 in LA! Such an inspiring venue! There are so many speakers listed on the presenter’s program that I am in already puzzling over how to choose… Lucky for me, I’ve already ordered my audio recordings of all the presenter’s, so I’ll be able to hear them all at a later date when their sent to me via email in an mp3 format!

The good news is the day will begin for all the sessions with Pat Fraley!  He’s about to talk about the elements of comedy.  Imagine our surprise when Brad Garrett was planted in the room, and assisted Pat with his presentation!  He was kind enough to pose with several voiceover artists.  Rick tracked the photo down through Pat Fraley, and here we are!  …and yes, Rick and I are both STANDING next to Brad in this pic.

More good news… my lost luggage arrived late last night, so I’m off to get dressed for the day in clean clothes!

Voice 2010

I’m on an adventure! From DC, sitting in a Chicago airport waiting to board a plane for Los Angeles…

As I sit at the gate, my connecting plane about to arrive, I just tried to hop onto the airport hot spot with my new 3G iPad. It seems I have to pay extra for that privilege in O’Hara Airport. My hope was to use the iPad app for WordPress, and simply create my next blog. So…since I wanted to create my next entry,I’ll try “Plan B.” I decided to open my Pages app, and simply type on my touchpad. I’ll try copying it onto the iPad itself, since I don’t have Internet access at the moment.

I’m headed to the VOICE 2010, “The Voiceover International Creative Experience.”
For the next several days, I plan to blog about my impressions of this huge convention of worldwide VO talent. I am thrilled to able to attend.

Progressing with iPad

Woohoo! iPad is now connected to my mobile me account and my home computer is synched with it! The email is working because my home WIFI is synched to it. Gmail is working perfectly. If I read an email on my iPad and delete it, it deletes from my home computer as well. So far, my Verizon account appears on my iPad, but doesn’t delete from my home computer when I delete from my iPad. Is that something I’ve done improperly when setting it up? I’ll have to ask tomorrow when I visit the Apple Store for a business session workshop.

I love that my existing contacts from my home computer are now on my iPad because I activated my mobile me account. Because I have the 3G version of the iPad, all my social media accounts are up and operational, so I don’t have to use extra apps, just the original websites that are already familiar to me.

Blogging update: Interesting to note that WordPress works great with my iPad, but Blogspot won’t let me even type on its site from my iPad!
